A Brief History
Umatic was the first videotape that was self contained within a cassette. Other formats at the time used open reel to reel video tape.
It was introduced in 1971 by Sony and was intended for the consumer market but the costs were very high. Sony decoded to market these machines for Profesional use and well as Educational use.
Two versions were developed the Lowband Umatic and its big brother the much higher quality High Band Umatic. Production companies and programme producers were quick to use this new technology for their business.
FAQ Umatic
Can my tapes be mastered to Blu-Ray HD
Yes we can transfer to either SD standard Definition or HD High Definition in HD 1080p. Being a broadcast format there is more colour information to start with better sound over consumer formats.
Timebase Correction
All our videotape professional captures go through timebase correctors. What this does in plain english is that it will reduce or eliminate errors caused by instability in analogue recorders.Keeping the picture as best we can to a stable quality picture.
If you want detailed technical information on the entire Timebase Correction process all information is available on the internet.
For clients we deal with the technical stuff but at the same time let you what and why we use these complex industrial units to provide you with the best picture we can based on your original recordings.

Umatic Videotape Content
Most clients who require Umatic tapes transfered are either entertainment ad agencies or programme producers so we do not edit your recordings only restore the audio and video if required.

All Umatic Lowband and Highband recordings can be converted to either SD standard definition or HD High Definition.
NB Don,t be fooled by other companies if the tape started out as SD it will only upscale to HD container but never a true HD the broadcast hardware only fills in the missing pixel information but it will be better than SD.
